Ingredients
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup milk
1 1/4 cups peeled and finely diced apples (about 1–2 apples)
For the crumble topping:
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cubed
For the frosting:
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tbsp milk or cream
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
3. In a large bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy.
4. Beat in eggs and vanilla until combined.
5. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk, mixing just until smooth.
6. Fold in diced apples.
7. Divide batter evenly among cupcake liners.
8. Make the crumble topping by combining flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon; cut in the butter with a fork until crumbly.
9. Sprinkle crumble evenly over the cupcakes.
10. Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
11. Cool completely on a wire rack.
12. For the frosting, beat butter until creamy, then add powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon; beat until fluffy.
13. Frost cupcakes and dust with extra cinnamon if desired.

Use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best flavor balance.
Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumble for extra crunch.
