Description
Delicate, golden tartlets filled with sweet caramelized onions, creamy cheese, and flaky pastry an elegant appetizer or holiday party favorite.
Ingredients
2 tbsp olive oil
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
1/2 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Fresh thyme leaves for garnish
Instructions
1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
2. Add sliced onions, salt, and sugar; cook slowly, stirring often, for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and caramelized.
3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
4. Roll out puff pastry and cut into 3-inch squares or circles.
5. Place pastry pieces on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
6. Spoon a small amount of caramelized onion onto each piece.
7. Top with shredded Gruyère cheese.
8. Brush the edges of the pastry with beaten egg.
9. Bake for 15–18 minutes or until golden and puffed.
10. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves before serving.
Notes
Serve warm or at room temperature.
Try topping with a small piece of brie before baking for a richer flavor.
These tartlets can be made ahead and reheated just before serving.
