Description
This French Onion Dip is rich, creamy, and full of deep caramelized onion flavor. Perfect for chips, veggies, or as a party appetizer, it combines a luscious sour cream and mayonnaise base with sweet, slow-cooked onions.
Ingredients
2 large yellow onions, finely diced
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 tbsp olive oil
1 ½ cups sour cream
½ cup mayonnaise
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp salt, or to taste
¼ tsp black pepper
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Optional: chopped chives or parsley for garnish
Instructions
1. In a skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onions and cook slowly for 25–30 minutes, stirring often, until deeply golden and caramelized. Reduce heat if onions start to brown too quickly.
2. Remove from heat and let the onions cool for about 10 minutes.
3. In a bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
4. Stir in the cooled caramelized onions until evenly mixed.
5. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to let the flavors blend.
6. Garnish with fresh chives or parsley and serve cold.
Notes
Tips:
– Caramelize onions slowly for the sweetest, richest flavor.
– Use a non-stick or heavy-bottomed skillet to prevent burning.
– Chill for a few hours or overnight for the best flavor development.
