- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- Red food coloring
- Buttercream frosting
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and mix on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Carefully stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin.
- Add red food coloring to achieve the desired color, if using.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
- Once cooled, frost with buttercream frosting and decorate as desired.
Notes
Make sure all your ingredients are at room temperature for the best mixing. Don’t skip the boiling water; it helps to create a moist cake.
